As well as an environmental team from the RTA, Thiess and Parsons Brinckerhoff, an independent environmental management representative assesses various aspects of the works and checks for compliance. The environmental management representative's responsibility is to ensure the project's compliance with the Minister of Planning's conditions of approval and obligations from the planning approval process. The environmental management representative is required to audit specific work activities, review reports, assess environmental monitoring data and undertake regular site inspections of the project works.
An environmental management system has been developed specifically for this project. The environmental management system was developed in accordance with ISO 14001 to address environmental performance for the design, construction and operational phases of the project. The environmental management system incorporates sustainability goals relating to social, environmental and economic performance. The project environmental management document incorporates three plans; namely
- Design management plan.
- Construction environmental management plan.
- Operational environmental management plan.
During construction, the Construction Environmental Management Plan (CEMP) specifically addresses a number of specialised areas, which are documented in sub-plans. These include:
- Air quality.
- Soil and water quality.
- Noise and vibration.
- Traffic management.
- Flora and fauna.
- Heritage management.
- Hazard and risk management.
- Contamination investigation and management.
- Acid sulfate soil management.
- Spoil and fill management.
